PHARR, Texas — As schools across the nation recognize Teacher Appreciation Week, PSJA ISD alumna Dr. Tayde Garcia’s story offers a clear example of the lasting influence educators have on their students, not just in the classroom, but across a lifetime.

When Garcia arrived in Pharr in the summer of 1995, she was 14 years old, adjusting to a new country, a new language, and an unfamiliar school system. What could have been an isolating experience became something else entirely. Within PSJA ISD, she found a network of educators who saw her potential and helped her build the confidence to move forward.

Garcia began at Lyndon B. Johnson Middle School and later attended PSJA North Early College High School in Pharr, graduating in 2000. The transition was not easy, but the support she received made a measurable difference.

“What truly made a difference during those formative years was the remarkable support I received from my teachers, coaches, and principals,” Garcia said. “Their dedication and encouragement left a lasting impression on my heart.”

At PSJA North ECHS, Garcia fully engaged in student life. She competed in multiple sports, including volleyball, cross-country, soccer, track and field, powerlifting, and tennis. She also participated in student organizations, building leadership skills that would later define her career. These experiences were shaped and guided by educators who invested time and attention in her development.

Her coaches, in particular, played a decisive role. Their mentorship extended beyond athletics, reinforcing discipline, accountability, and belief in her own abilities. That influence ultimately guided her toward a career in education.

Garcia continued her studies at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, earning a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2009. She later obtained a master's in Special Education in 2015, followed by a doctoral degree in Ethical Leadership in Education in 2024 from the University of St. Thomas.

Today, Dr. Garcia is a teacher and coach, working directly with students who, in many cases, face challenges similar to those she once experienced. Her approach is intentional. She sets high expectations while providing the same kind of support that once helped her succeed.

Teacher Appreciation Week holds particular meaning for her. It is a reminder of the individuals who did more than teach content. They created stability, offered encouragement, and opened doors she did not yet know existed.

Her work now reflects that same standard. In the classroom and on the field, she emphasizes perseverance, teamwork, and personal responsibility, preparing students for life beyond school.

Dr. Garcia’s journey reflects a broader truth about PSJA ISD. The impact of a teacher is not temporary. It carries forward through the lives of students who, in turn, influence others.

In her case, that impact has come full circle.
